work space
Apr. 1st, 2006 02:34 pmI'm kind of excited about our latest home project. It's really boring to everyone else, I'm sure, but... So we have this little house that I love but there is just not enough storage space! And Dan & I both are collectors and thus every bit of space is piled and crammed with our stuff. Dan's hobby is BIG (arcade & pinball) but we can accommodate all that in the basement and garage. But my hobbies--photography, sewing, knitting, and soaping--kind of need to be in the main part of the house. I don't dare store my photo equipment in the basement lest it get stolen, cat pee on it, or other moisture issues. So we decided to give up on having the spare room as a guest room. It wasn't all that nice or functional for guests anyway. So we bought a big shelving unit from IKEA and are going to take out the hide-a-bed and Dan's computer desk, then custom-build a long counter/desk along an entire wall. That way we have a big worktable (which I always am in need of for tracing & cutting patterns, framing photos, taking product photos, etc) and we can have the sewing machine permanently set up in there instead of the kitchen table. I've already moved some of my fabric and yarn and boxes of finished soap in there and it feels so good to have a place for some of my things.
When guests come over we're just going to use one of those nice Queen size inflatable mattresses. It will be more comfortable that that torture device called a hide-a-bed ever was, I guarantee.
